What is Girls in ICT Day?

Globally, it is estimated that the world shortfall in skilled Information and Communication Technology (ICT) professionals exceeds two million. Despite the obvious benefits, many girls never even consider a career in ICTs.

The ICT sector remains a growing sector for employment and a key economic factor in both developed and developing countries. Many countries and regions are predicting a shortage of qualified staff with math, science, engineering and computing skills to meet the growing demand.

At the same time, many companies are looking to increase the number of women in the sector. This means that highly qualified women in technical fields have significant opportunities available. Girls in ICT Day has been organized in the USA and Europe for more than ten years.

ITU and Girls in ICT Day

In 2010 ITU adopted a resolution to celebrate the fourth Thursday of every April as international “Girls in ICT Day”, to promote technology as an exciting career choice for girls and women in both the developed and developing worlds. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is the body of the United Nations in charge of information and communication technologies (ICT). Their mandate is encourage the world to use technology, set unified standards globally and address issues that are raised with technology development.
Under ITU's auspice Girls' Day is celebrated worldwide.

Armenia and "Girls in ICT Day"

Starting from the year of 2000, ICT is recognized as one of the fastest growing industry branches in Armenia, and more jobs are created in this industry than any other. The developments and the geopolitical situation of the last 20 post independence years show that Armenia has no other choice, but knowledge-based economy development.  It’s obvious, that women should take a more prominent role in this process.

This year, with the initiation of "Women and Information Society" NGO, “International Girls in ICT Day” will be celebrated in Armenia. The celebration is an excellent opportunity to encourage our girls to choose a career in ICT.
